What is Life Coaching?

Life Coaching is one of many different tools to improve personal development and our life experiences. When you think of self-improvement you may think of:

  • Therapy

  • Counselling

  • Mentoring

  • Consulting

Coaching has similarities but is a unique service specifically designed to be resourceful, future-focused and goal orientated.

Say you were stuck in a tree, you’re scared, uncomfortable, and you want to get down. Here’s what you might hear from the following:

Therapist: How do you feel about being stuck in that tree?

Mentoring: I got stuck in a tree once too.

Consulting: In my experience, the best way to get down from a tree is…

A life coach would go about this in a different way. They can see you’re stuck in the tree, and they acknowledge your current situation. However, what they are most interested in is:

Where you want to be instead?

What has worked well for you in the past that you could use here?

What is holding you back from getting down out of the tree? How will you overcome that?

What new ideas could you think of to get out of the tree?

Which idea is the best/safest/most daring/most fun/quick?

When are you going to take action?

High five you’re out of the tree!

So, in reality there are few discussions about trees, but hopefully you get my point.

If there is currently a gap between where you are now and where you want to be, and you’re ready to make changes and try new ideas, then life coaching might be the right way forward for you.

“Don’t be upset by the results you didn’t get, with the work you didn’t do.”
